ACC - Association of Christian CounsellorsThe Association was founded in 1992 following discussions with representatives of a number of Christian counselling organisations in the United Kingdom. These discussions demonstrated that there was a need for a nationwide umbrella organisation which could undertake certain activities on behalf of its members. The vision may be summarised as follows:
Willows Counselling ServiceWillows is a counselling service which is open to all adults, whether or not they practise the Christian faith. It is based in a small house in north Swindon where there are two counselling rooms. Willows has approximately 30 volunteer counsellors, 20 supervisors, 10 trainers, 4 part time staff (3 paid, 1 unpaid). Each counsellor will have completed a minimum of 500 hours training at ACC level 2 or above and some will also have other specialist training. NAPAC - The National Association for People Abused in ChildhoodNAPAC is a Registered Charity, which has been set up as a result of a key recommendation by the National Commission of Inquiry into the Prevention of Child Abuse, which reported in October 1996. Mission Statement
NAPAC plans to achieve these aims by:
Hearing Voices NetworkFormed in 1988, this is another Manchester based group which is a ‘network of people who hear voices, their relatives, carers and workers, who work towards gaining a better understanding of the experience of hearing voices and seeing visions, thus reducing ignorance and anxiety about these issues’. The Network seeks to elucidate more understanding of this condition which does not always require psychiatric care. Self-help and support groups have been formed to enable sufferers to discover strategies for managing and coping with their situations. The vision of HVN is to create an acceptance that hearing voices is a valid experience for which there are many explanations. It seeks to provide information and advice through training, publications, help-line and through newsletters. By raising the level of awareness of voice hearing, seeing visions, tactile sensations and other sensory experiences it is hoped that clients and others will be helped. For adults and children there is the opportunity to share experiences to understand and to learn from them and thereby to grow therapeutically. A very informative leaflet is available and a website at www.hearing-voices.org is in preparation. The hearing of voices may be one of the experiences of people with dissociative disorders, or with just plain ordinary ego-states that choose to make themselves heard internally in this way, so any normalisation of these experiences would be a very good thing.
